Cropping and aspect ratios: getting the framing right

Cropping and resizing solve different problems, and using the wrong one is why your photo came back squashed or missing someone's head. Here is which to reach for, and the ratios worth memorising.

Cropping and resizing get confused constantly, and the confusion is expensive: it is why a photo comes back stretched, or with the top of someone's head missing, or with grey bars down the sides.

The distinction is simple. Resizing changes how many pixels there are; the whole picture is still there, just bigger or smaller. Cropping changes what is in the picture; you throw part of it away and keep the rest at its original detail.

Two practical consequences. First, a 3:2 camera photo will always need cropping for a square or a 16:9 slot — there is no way around it, only a choice about what to lose. Second, shoot loose. Framing tightly in-camera leaves nothing to give when the same photo has to become a square, a story and a banner.

Cropping, step by step

  1. Open the Image Cropper and add your photoDrag, paste or browse. One image at a time — cropping is a decision per picture.

Straightening a crooked horizon

A horizon a couple of degrees off is one of those things nobody consciously notices and everybody unconsciously does. Rotating slightly leaves triangular gaps at the corners, so a straightened image is always cropped in a little — which is the other reason to shoot loose.

Straighten before you crop. Do it the other way round and you will lose part of the framing you just chose.

Framing that works

  • Cut at the right places. Crop through the middle of a limb, not at a joint. A crop at the wrist or ankle looks like an amputation; mid-forearm reads as a deliberate frame.
  • Leave looking room. A person facing right wants space on the right. Crop tight to the face they are looking at and the picture feels claustrophobic.
  • Keep the horizon off centre. Interesting sky, put it low. Interesting foreground, put it high. Dead centre is the one choice that says nothing.
  • Give faces headroom. A little space above the head; not a lot. A large gap above someone's head is the most common amateur framing mistake.
  • Crop for the destination. A thumbnail seen at 120px needs a much tighter crop than the same photo full-screen.

One photo, every platform

Making a square, a portrait, a story and a banner by hand from one shot is tedious and you will get the numbers wrong. Cropping to an exact physical size

Official photos are specified in millimetres, not pixels, and usually at a required DPI — a 35 × 45 mm passport photo at 600 DPI, for example. Passport Photo Maker works in those units directly and tiles the result onto a printable sheet, so you get several copies from one print.

Crop first, then everything else

Order matters. Crop, then resize, then compress. Cropping first means you are not spending resolution or bytes on pixels you were about to discard, and compressing first means re-compressing an already compressed image when you export — which visibly degrades it.

And keep the original. A crop is a decision, and decisions get revisited when the same photo is needed in a shape you did not anticipate.

Common questions

Cropping removes part of the image and keeps the rest at its original detail. Resizing keeps the whole image but changes how many pixels it has. Crop to change the framing or shape; resize to change the file's dimensions.

Not directly — the remaining pixels are untouched. But you end up with fewer of them, so a heavily cropped photo has less resolution to work with if it later needs to be displayed large.
