The pixels are really gone
Redaction is applied to the image data itself, not drawn as an overlay, so the hidden content cannot be recovered from the exported file. Use a strong blur or a coarse pixelation for anything sensitive — light blurring of small text can sometimes be reversed.
Exporting also drops the original file's EXIF and GPS metadata.
Hiding sensitive details properly
Draw a rectangle to blur or pixelate an area, or paint over irregular shapes with the blur or pixelate brush. Intensity and brush size can be changed after a region is drawn.
The effect is written into the pixels when you export, not laid on top as a layer, so the hidden content is not in the downloaded file. Hidden details like GPS location are removed from the download too.
Light blur on small text can sometimes be reversed. For account numbers and passwords, use pixelate or turn on “Strong blur”; even the lowest intensity is designed to make text unreadable.
