How much damage the code can survive.
Medium: rebuilds up to ~15% of a damaged or covered code. A good default for print. Higher levels make the code denser.
Optimised mixes numeric, alphanumeric and byte segments for the smallest code. Byte mode encodes everything as UTF-8.
Auto picks the smallest version that fits and the mask that scores best under the QR standard. A fixed version keeps codes the same size across a set.
Making QR codes that scan
A QR code stores its content in a grid of modules, plus three large corner squares that scanners use to find and straighten it. Styling is safe as long as those corners stay recognisable, the colours contrast clearly and there is empty space around the code — the standard asks for a quiet zone four modules wide.
Error correction is what lets a code survive damage. Level L can rebuild about 7% of the code, M 15%, Q 25% and H 30%. A logo in the middle hides part of the code, so it needs Q or H, and should stay small: the tool estimates how much of the code a logo covers and warns before it becomes risky.
After every change the code is decoded again on your device and compared with what it should contain. That confirms the symbol is intact, but it isn’t a guarantee for every phone — print size, paper, screens and lighting all play a part, so test the final code with a few devices before printing a run.
SVG and PDF downloads are vector files, so the code stays sharp at any size. For print, choose the printed width and resolution; PNG and JPG files carry that DPI, and PDF places the code at its exact physical size.
