How to remove a background from an image online, for free

Automatic cutouts are free now, and good enough for most photos. The difference between a usable result and an obviously fake one comes down to the photo you start with and the two minutes you spend checking the edges.

Background removal used to be a paid feature. A segmentation model now does in a few seconds what took an afternoon with a pen tool, and it runs well enough on an ordinary laptop that it does not need a server at all.

That changes what is worth knowing. Not "how do I cut this out" — the tool does that — but which photos it will handle well, what to check before you use the result, and what to save it as so the transparency survives.

Remove a background in four steps

Which photos cut out cleanly

Segmentation models are trained to find a subject and separate it from everything else. They do that best when a human would find it easy too. The strongest predictor of a good result is contrast between the subject and whatever is behind it.

If you control the photography, you control most of the outcome. A subject standing a metre away from the wall, lit so it is brighter than the background, cuts out almost perfectly. That is worth more than any amount of fixing afterwards.

Checking the result properly

The preview is shown on a checkerboard, which is the long-standing convention for "nothing here". It is also a forgiving background — grey squares hide grey fringing. Two checks catch nearly everything:

  1. Zoom to 100% and walk the outline. You are looking for a halo of the old background colour, or a hard staircase where a soft edge should be.
  2. Put the cutout on the background it will actually live on. Something that looks fine on white can show a pale rim on a dark page. If the final background is dark, check it against dark.

What to do with the cutout

A transparent PNG is rarely the finished job. Most of the time it is an ingredient, and the next step decides the format:

  • A profile picture. Profile Picture Maker crops to a square or circle at the sizes platforms expect, and can place the cutout on a solid colour.
  • A product listing. Marketplaces usually want a white background rather than transparency. Flatten onto white when you convert — converting JPG to PNG covers what happens in each direction.

Doing a lot of them

The cutout itself is one image at a time, because the model has to run on each one. What you can batch is everything either side of it: use Batch Image Tools to bring a folder of product shots to a common size first, then cut out, then run the finished PNGs back through batch to convert and compress in a single pass.

For a large catalogue, settle the process on five images before you start the other three hundred. Deciding halfway through that every cutout should have had a 40px margin is an expensive discovery.

Common mistakes

  • Saving as JPEG. JPEG has no alpha channel, so transparent areas are flattened onto a colour — usually white. That is why a logo suddenly grows a white box.
  • Judging the cutout on the checkerboard alone. Always view it against the real background before you sign it off.
  • Starting from a small image. The model can only work with the edge detail that is there. Use the largest version you have.
  • Expecting hair to be perfect. Automatic matting approximates fine strands. If the result has to be flawless, budget for manual work.
  • Compressing before cutting out. Compression artifacts sit exactly on the edges the model needs. Cut out first, compress last.

Those are pixels that were part subject and part background before the cut. Cropping in slightly, or placing the image on a background of a similar tone, removes the effect in most cases.
