What happens to transparency

JPEG cannot store transparency, so every transparent or semi-transparent pixel is blended onto a solid colour. White is the default. If the image is going onto a coloured page or slide, set Background for transparency to that colour so the edges blend correctly instead of showing a white fringe.

When PNG to JPG is a bad idea

  • Screenshots of text, interfaces or diagrams. JPEG adds fuzzy halos around hard edges. If the goal is a smaller file for the web, WebP keeps them crisp.
  • Images you are still editing. Every JPEG save loses a little; keep the PNG as the master and export JPG last.
  • Images that need transparency.

Common questions

It is filled with a solid colour — white by default. You can choose the colour before converting so it matches where the image will be used.

Slightly, because JPEG is lossy. At quality 80–90 the difference is invisible for photos at normal viewing size. Text and sharp lines show it first.

Simple graphics with flat colour compress very well as PNG already. The big savings come from photographs. For graphics, WebP is usually the better way to save space.
