Why you have a WebP in the first place

Websites serve WebP because it makes pages faster, and when you save an image from a page your browser keeps the format it was sent in. Before converting, it's worth knowing that current versions of Windows Photos and macOS Preview open WebP, so you may only need to convert for the specific place that rejects it. What changes

  • Size usually goes up. JPEG is less efficient than WebP, so the same picture needs more bytes. That's expected, not a fault.
  • Quality: both formats are lossy, so converting re-encodes the image. Use quality 90 to keep what is there — there is no benefit in going lower unless you need a smaller file.
  • Transparency is flattened onto the background colour you choose. If the WebP has a transparent background you want to keep, use WebP to PNG.
  • Animation: an animated WebP becomes a still image of its first frame.

A note on images from other websites

Converting an image changes its format, not who owns it. Photos saved from websites usually belong to someone; check the licence before reusing one.
