Converting a transparent PNG to JPG flattens transparency onto a background colour you choose. Animated GIFs are flattened to their first frame.

Converting PNG to WebP

Add PNGs above and download WebP files. This is usually the single biggest saving available for a website's images: WebP keeps the transparency PNG is used for, and screenshots and graphics often come out around half the size or less with no visible change.

Transparency is kept

WebP stores a full alpha channel, so soft shadows and anti-aliased edges stay smooth — unlike converting to JPEG, which flattens them onto a colour. Product cut-outs, logos and UI graphics can all move to WebP.

When to keep the PNG

ImageDoctor encodes WebP with your browser's encoder at the quality you set, and at normal settings that means lossy WebP. At 85 or above, screenshots and graphics usually look identical to the PNG at normal size — check at 100% zoom around text. Keep the PNG when you need a guaranteed pixel-exact file:

  • Pixel art and sprites, where every pixel is deliberate.
  • Master files you will keep editing.
  • Favicons and app icons, which platforms expect as PNG or ICO — the Favicon Generator makes those.
  • Destinations that don't take WebP, such as some upload forms and print services.

Photos saved as PNG

If the PNG is actually a photograph, WebP will shrink it dramatically — PNG is a poor format for photos. If you don't need transparency and the photo is going somewhere other than a website, PNG to JPG is the more compatible choice.
